Free and Open source software…

Yesterday when I was online on gmail , my junior Shweta asked me that what is FOSS , I replied her but thought that this is the area where persons are still having many misunderstandings , so I decided to write on this topic .  This is in no way an exhaustive post, neither am I an Open Source Expert. I am only sharing with you my knowledge and experience of FOSS.

So here we go –

1.What does Free and Open Source Software mean?

The concept of free and open source software refers to the right of the end user to modify a FOSS software however they want without any restriction provided the output will also be made available freely to other users.There are hundreds of softwares that are are available free of any restriction for you to use.

2.What does free mean ?

There are thousands of FOSS software that are available both free as in free beer and free speech. From full fledged operating systems, office suites, graphics softwares , just name it. All you have to do is download them and use them. No licensing fees, no product keys, nothing. Just download and use. Simple as that.

3.Why should we use FOSS?

Simple. Aside from it being free, you can be assured of very quality and up to date products. This because almost anyone can contribute to the development of FOSS and thus people from all over the world help to develop any given software which enriches the diversity and flavor that go into it. Also, because open source softwares have their source code in the public eye, it makes it nigh impossible to add any malicious line of code without it being detected and eliminated quickly. This makes open source softwares more secure than their closed counterparts.

4.Do we need a particular OS in order to use FOSS?

No. There are FOSS softwares for almost all OS platforms around today. There are softwares for Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Just search for the softaware relating to your OS.

5.So what makes FOSS unique from other softwares?

In my opinion, what makes FOSS unique is the massive, dedicated community that you can choose to become part of when you use FOSS. An OS like Ubuntu has a very loving, dedicated and superb community that is just willing to help you with every single problem you may encounter with the OS and there hundreds like the Ubuntu Forums that to me, make FOSS such a joy to use.

6.If you want to try some out then begin from here.

I will just make a small list of some great FOSS that you can try out for yourself. You will be happy you did.
Web browser try Firefox if you are not already using it.
Image editor try Gimp. Also a free alternative to Photoshop.
Multi media player, try VLC.
I also suggest you try Ubuntu, a free, powerful and fully customizable OS.
You can also visit OSALT for all the free softwares you can think of.

Emotionally speaking …

My first job … Thank you ARICENT !

Hello friends , After a long pause ARICENT visited JNU campus for recruitment on 13th november-09 . Their team was of 7 peoples.

At first , PPT was given by HR  Kavita Ahuja. After completion of PPT , we were asked for a written test consisting four sections . First section was relatd to reasoning (some questions from syllogism, total 30 questions, time 30 mins). Second section was ‘attention to detail’.In this section questions were asked to find the word matching (like , abbbccddee   abbbccdeee abbbccddee how many words match ), what will be the next image .Time limit was 20 mins for 20 questions for this section . Section three was full of data structure and algorithms (20 questions, 20 mins). Some questions were related to  queue , expression evaluation , sorting complexities , dequeue . Section four might be consisting C/C++/JAVA , you will be asked to choose one of them and all the questions will be related to that only. I had chosen C , this section was having 30 questions in 40 mins (only section having time more than the no. of questions). In this section questions were quite easy like o/p prediction , find the error etc. You can follow test your c skills , exploring c , pointer in c , MCQ for this part .Try to be strong in your concepts . This will be enough to make it through . One more important thing , each section was having it’s cut off … and I don’t know how much was it . After completion of written test ,we have been given a sheet consisting some HR questions and we were asked to fill the sheet in half an hour , questions were like ,”tell me about yourself”, “have you ever faced some critical problem in your life and what you did to solve that problem”, etc …After that result had been declared within 20 mins. 16 qualified for the next round out of 31 .Next round was group discussion , we all have been divided in two groups , each consisting 8 members . In my group the topic was “Civilized awards are necessary or not .” . We were given 20 mins to discuss on it . I spoke 3 times in the whole GD with some good points and I was the one who wind up the things in last . It’ll be better if you try to take initiatives but always give others chance to speak , this will really help you .This was not elimination round , but certainly having some weight . When GD was finished , we all one by one called for the interview . This was one to one interview . I have to wait a lot for my turn  .HR was very co-operative , initially he asked me about my background (like where is my home etc …) .Then he asked me to write some programs like write a function taking two strings as arguments and second one is being appended to the first one .Second was , delete the last node from a singly link list .Third one was to implement fibonacci series via recursion . Then he wrote some code and asked me about the output . one code was :

char p=1;

while(p<1000)

p++;

He asked me about the o/p or error .

Second code was related to the pointer concepts .

Other questions were :

1. What is hash table , hash function ?

2. Why collision occurs , how to avoid it ?

3. TCP/IP layers and their functionality .

4. What is 2NF , 3NF , why there is need of 3 NF .

5. 8085 , 8086 microprocesser’s functionality .

6. How queues are implemented in a system .

7. complexities of some sorting algorithm.

8. What is macro and difference between a macro and a function .

9. Black box and white box testing .

10.Some questions from digital system design .

These are the questions that are still in my memory . 🙂

After that he asked me that have I ever faced the situation when I have a very less time to complete a given task , define how i did that , and what was the outcome . Also have I ever encouraged my teammates working together to achieve a specific goal . I gave satisfactory answers of these questions . I felt that HR was quite convinced from my answers .Finally he told that he is done with me … so in this way my interview completed .

After waiting around 2 hours , results were declared (around 8 pm) , 10 have been chosen , 9 were from MCA and one was from M.Tech. I was also one of them . 🙂

finally wo got it !

Some words of appreciation for Guys/gls of JNU-MCA

Hello folks ,

I took admission in JNU-MCA in 2007 . I was not from computer background , and first time in any professional course .

It may be a bit funnier for you but that was my first arrival to New Delhi when I took admission in JNU. I was quite wondered and feeling restless . As i came JNU I faced a short phase of intro (Now I really miss those days). All this helped me to interact with my batch mats . I remember one incident , i was feeling cold and I slept late in night , when i opened my eyes in morning I saw that my whole batch was standing near the gate of room with a bottle of cough syrup . I was touched . I was not missing my home . Here I have list of some guys and girls who really inspired and helped me in a true sense . Here we go –

1.  Sunil K.      This guy has an engine called “XINE” , hey don’t laugh . Really i have never seen such energetic guy . No matter how late  in night ,how far away you are when ever you want him to present there , he’ll be .

2.  Mahesh      What to say about this guy . He always kept his moral aloft no matter how difficult situations are. Always eager to learn new things , yeah dancing swimming and many more.

3.   Mayankesh    My roomy , one of the most talented guy that my batch got . Very good sense of humor , you can’t feel bore in his company .

4.   Shekhar    Hey my “chacha” , how can i forget to place him in the list . Some times he will irritate  you but i can bet you will still want his company . Matured guy who knows how to handle the things . Whenever counting is done for “fadoo bande” he always secures top of the chart . But please someone tell him that reduce some weight . Rest is cool.

5.   Neeraj S.     Last but not least , this guy came in touch with me in 2nd sem properly. He is the man who influenced me deeply. No matter what’s my problem technical or nontechnical he used to be always there to help me . I have learnt a lot of things from him and I feel proud by addressing him as a friend . Kudos to nee !!!

Wake up sid – movie of the month

hello folks ,

My mid sem exams are going on and i am quite busy in study . But at the same time one of the most awaited movie “Wake up sid” released and I couldn’t control myself from watching it. This movie is starred by Ranveer Kapoor , Konkona sen sharma , Rahul Khanna ,Anupam Kher, Supriya Pathak . This is the first movie directed by Ayan Mukharjee and he has shown what he got . Very soft romantic comedy which turns to be a family movie in last half of movie .

From my point of view , this is the first movie in which Ranveer really acted and what to say about Konkona , she is usually superb .

The movie starts off in a light mood, where Ranbir is shown lazily preparing for his college exams. Later he meets Konkona in a late night party, who has just arrived in Mumbai and becomes her first friend in the city. With more e-mail exchanges and Ranbir helping her decorating her new flat, a friendly relationship starts building between the two. But all this just keeps happening in a very laid off manner and the viewer desperately waits for something more interesting to unfold on the screen. Till intermission the only scene which rises above the usual stuff is the interview scene between Rahul Khanna & Konkona.

In the second half, as Ranbir leaves his parent’s house, the movie starts endorsing live in relationship with a cool attitude. Along with that, the story has the same old clashes between rich and middle class ways of living with an added rotten plot of two love triangles incorporated lightly into the script. Keeping more emphasis on the main characters, the writers strangely leave out the parents (Anupam Kher & Supriya Pathak) out of the narration and bring them in whenever they feel like. According to the script the parents don’t even care to know the whereabouts of their only son, after leaving his house in anger.

However, the movie has its moments with few worth watching scenes representing the current generation. One, when both Ranbir and his friend laugh at the break up story. Two, when Konkona and Ranbir play around with water bottles and three the birthday scene at Konkona’s flat. With more such scenes, the movie could have been the latest talk of the town among the younger generation. Moreover, a completely predicable climax also leaves the viewer less entertained in the end. The climax required a great amount of trimming since the movie drags a lot towards its concluding moments.

Music of the movie will not disappoint you , yeah it’s true that songs are nothing capable of making you to go dance but still you can’t ignore them , they already secured their place on top of the charts.Cinematography is really superb and catches Mumbai(I have to use mumbai here not bombay as Raj Thakrey will not allow me to live on this planet, lolzz !!!) in a cool manner .Last but not least , supriya pathak has performed her role in a very descent way . She has just done the role of a mother who doesn’t have much knowledge of english but still she tries her level best to learn it everyday so she could be her son’s friend , could talk him in his manner , could manage herself not to embarrass his son in front of his friends . Really very touchy role she has performed .

a shot of movie –

wake up sid, saare pal kahe , wake up sid chal kahin chale !

wake up sid, saare pal kahe , wake up sid chal kahin chale !

The movie “Wake Up Sid” has a very interesting plot of knowing your hidden talents, where Ranbir finds out that he has got a great unexplored talent of photography

Finally kudos to ranveer , supriya and konkana and ayan. You all have made this movie worth watchable .

Some interesting C code …

Hello friends ,

I was just surfing the net late in night and then I came to see some interesting C codes . So here we go-

1) Suppose if one want to know the program name through the execution of code itself , then code for this is –

#include<stdio.h>

int main()

{

printf(“the source file name is %s\n”,__FILE__);

return 0;

}

What happens here in this program , __FILE__ is actually a macro which stands for the file name in which program is kept in.

Just use this keyword in the program and compiler will do the rest .

2) Suppose if we have a situation in a program where we are taking an input which is not going to be used then we have to use a variable to store that input like scanf(“%d”,&a) , means wastage of memory . But we have a technique to avoid this –

What we do for this , just use the scanf statement like this –

scanf(“%*d”);

by using * here we force scanf to scan input from the standard input but it won’t assign to any variable .(This is scanned in a buffer of sufficient size and you don’t need to worry about that !

This section will be continued , wait for the next post !

Till then happy coding , 🙂

#include<stdio.h>

int main()
{
printf(“the source file name is %s\n”,__FILE__);
return 0;
}#include<stdio.h>
int main()
{
printf(“the source file name is %s\n”,__FILE__);
return 0;
}

Love you Leonidas !

Hello friends ,

Well I am a newbie to Linux distro , just moved  to it about 6 months ago .

I was using ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid) but i found myself in trouble while changing the theme and I got stuck. Then my friend Neeraj has suggested me to try fedora 11  live CD . I never used live cd of fedora before  so i was little  bit worried . But then i take a little bit risk and installed Fedora 11 in my machine .

Surprisingly it took only 10 minutes to install and now my system is working better . Fedora 11 has many new features that were not present in Fedora 10 like – ext4 file system , 20 seconds start up time (Ubuntu 9.04 claims 19.4 sec boot up time), automatic fonts and mime installer , firefox 3.5 , gcc 4.4 , gnome 2.26 , python 2.6 and many more . Some of aforementioned changes may not be in live CD , but you can install it if you have internet connection . Here is the screen shot of my desktop –>

Leonidas ---> cool look !

Leonidas ---> cool look !

Leonidas is roaring !

The Truman Show !!!

I saw this wonderful movie some time ago , and really the beauty of this movie forced me to see it again and again . JIM CARREY has dominated the movie all the time . He has proved that why his name is always taken with a lot of respect in cinema all over world .

Here comes it’s short synopsis –

The film is set mostly in a town wholly dedicated to a continually running television show. All of the people present in the town are actors or film crew except protagonist Truman Burbank, who is unaware that he lives in a constructed reality filmed for the entertainment of those outside. Central characters simulate friendship or familial relations to Truman.

Truman was chosen out of five unwanted babies to be a TV star, whereupon film producer Christof ordered built a gigantic studio to encapsulate Seahaven, the artificial town in which Truman lives, believing himself to be part of a genuine neighborhood. The enclosed studio allowed the producers, directors and crew to control every aspect of Truman’s environment, including the weather.

To prevent Truman from trying to escape and discover the truth underlying his artificial world, his father is “killed” in a staged boating incident so as to make Truman afraid of water. Because Seahaven appears to be an island, this fear removes Truman’s every chance of escape. Despite Truman’s staged relationship with his wife Meryl, he desires to meet and court the scene-extra called Sylvia, who is removed from the cast by the producers while trying to explain to Truman the true nature of his life. In the thirtieth year of his life, Truman begins to realize the unrealistic routine of his world and tries to escape Seahaven.Along his path to truth and escape, Truman encounters obstacles placed in his way, including choreographed traffic jams, the inability to arrange any trips, sudden breakdowns of transport, a non-existent nuclear meltdown, and an artificially created hurricane on the “ocean”. He finally reaches the edge of the constructed reality and exits via a door in the wall, cheered on by an audience of millions (including Sylvia). Christof finally talks to Truman from the clouds. He tries to convince Truman to stay. Truman, however, says “In case I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening, and good night.” He bows to his audience and steps into the real world through the door.

Little-Endianism and Big-Endianism , know what your system follow !!!

Hello friends ,

This is not a new thing for most of you , but still I am trying to enlighten this topic .

I’ll focus mainly on two things –

1.How can I determine whether a machine’s byte order is big-endian or little endian?
2. How can we convert from one to another?

For above queries , first you need to know Little Endian and Big Endian .

Little Endian means that the lower order byte of the number is stored in memory at the lowest address, and the higher order byte is stored at the highest address. That is, the little end comes first.

For example, a 4 byte, 32-bit integer
Byte3 Byte2 Byte1 Byte0
will be arranged in memory as follows:

Base_Address+0 Byte0
Base_Address+1 Byte1
Base_Address+2 Byte2
Base_Address+3 Byte3

Here base address may be any valid address of location .

Intel processors use “Little Endian” byte order. That’s why most of us use little endian systems .

Big Endian means that the higher order byte of the number is stored in memory at the lowest address, and the lower order byte at the highest address. The big end comes first.

Base_Address+0 Byte3
Base_Address+1 Byte2
Base_Address+2 Byte1
Base_Address+3 Byte0

Motorola, Solaris processors use “Big Endian” byte order.

Now with the help of following code you can find out that which endianism your system follow !

int main()
{
int num=1;
if(*(char *)&num==1)
printf(“System follows Little Endian \n”);
else
printf(“System follows Big Endian \n”);

return 0;

}

So friends run this code on your machine .

Now for second query we have a function which converts a number from one endian to another .

And here we go –

int convert_endian(int a)
{
int byte0,byte1,byte2,byte3;
byte0=(a & 0x000000ff)>>0;
byte1=(a & 0x0000ff00)>>8;
byte2=(a & 0x00ff0000)>>16;
byte3=(a & 0xff000000)>>24;
return (byte0<<24 | byte1<<16|byte2<<8|byte3<<0);
}

The explanation of this code –

Code assumes 32 bit architecture and store all the bytes (4 in number) into separate temporary integers .. also ensure to have all the 8-bits are at their LSB’s
now return the number formed by concatenating of byte’s in reverse order .. this has been achieved in the code by ORing the various bytes shifted to the appropriate positions.

Hope this will help you to know your system better ! 🙂
